Suspected cannabis, cash, ammunition and several vehicles were seized in Co Clare during a number of searches yesterday.

Gardaí from the Clare Community Engagement area, along with officers from the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit and Crime Functional area, carried out a day of action in Ennis on Wednesday.

Personnel from the Road Safety Authority, Customs, Revenue and the Department of Social Protection were also involved.

A number of searches under warrant were carried out at domestic residences, along with roadside searches, multi-agency checkpoints and arrests for bench warrants.

Suspected cannabis worth over €2,400 was found at one residence, as well as €1,300 in cash at a domestic residence.

A quantity of ammunition was also found during a search at a separate domestic residence.

Seven vehicles seized for various offences, including dangerous driving, driving without tax or insurance and driving while unaccompanied as a learner.

One driver arrested and brought to Ennis Garda Station for failing a roadside drug test, which was positive for cocaine.

Eight people were arrested on foot of live bench warrants and brought to Ennis District Court.

Inspector Brian O'Connor said "great time and effort" went into yesterday's operation.

"I am sure that it will have an impact in the locality by restricting criminality, including the sale and supply of illegal drugs in the area, and give the community confidence that An Garda Síochána are proactively identifying targets and taking action so as to improve the quality of life of those living within the community," he said.

"I further wish to reassure the community that the day of action does not end on the day. An Garda Síochána will be making follow up arrests and further investigations so as to prosecute those involved".
