Man arrested over fatal hit-and-run incident in Dublin

A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident in Co Dublin which took place at around 9pm last night.

The incident, involving a pedestrian and a car, happened on Railway Street in Balbriggan.

The pedestrian, a man aged in his 30s, received emergency treatment at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The man's body was taken to Dublin City Mortuary where a post-mortem examination has been carried out.

Gardaí said that the driver of the car failed to remain at the scene. A short time later, gardaí responded to two public order incidents in the same area.

Describing both as reactionary, they said they were contained and there was no threat to public safety.

The road where the fatal crash happened was closed for a technical examination and has since reopened.

An investigation is under way and gardaí have arrested a man in 40s, who is being detained at a station in north Dublin.

A family liaison officer has been appointed and is providing support to the family of the man who died in the incident.

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for information and have asked witnesses to come forward.

They are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the movements of a black saloon car that was in the area at the time.

The car was later abandoned after a collision on Drogheda Street in Balbriggan with another saloon car shortly after the fatal incident.

Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses with video footage (including dash cam) from the Railway Street and Drogheda Street areas of Balbriggan between 8.30pm and 9.30pm to make it available to them.

Gardaí have also said that it is aware that images and video footage in relation to the incident are circulating on social media, and have asked the content not to be shared.
