Leo Beenhakker has become Poland's first foreign-born national-team coach after accepting the position on Tuesday.

The 63-year-old Dutchman replaces Pawel Janas, who resigned after Poland were eliminated from the World Cup in the group stages.

'I believe Beenhakker will introduce a new quality to Polish football and lead us to the European Championship finals for the first time,' Polish football federation president Michal Listkiewicz said.

Beenhakker was at the World Cup with Trinidad & Tobago, who also suffered an early exit but impressed many with dogged displays against England and Sweden.

Beenhakker has also coached Real Madrid, Ajax, Holland and Saudi Arabia.
