Former Labour minister Liam Kavanagh dies aged 86

Former Labour Party minister and Wicklow TD Liam Kavanagh has died aged 86.

In a statement, Labour leader Alan Kelly described him as a giant of Wicklow politics, adding that he represented his constituents with "determination, honesty, and integrity".

During his career, Mr Kavanagh also served as a councillor and MEP.

In 1981, he was appointed Minister for Labour and the Public Service.

He took over as Minister for the Environment in 1983.

Mr Kelly also paid tribute to Liam Kavanagh's efforts in the delivery of public housing in 1980s, during his time as minister for the environment.

Mr is survived by his wife, daughter, grandchildren and siblings.
